Wet basement this Spring? Turn to your built-in solution.

This Spring has been even more wet and rainy then normal. If your basement is like mine then you are starting to feel and see the dampness inside. In determining how to address the basement moisture, I first thought of purchasing another dehumidifier. The $200 price tag on a new dehumidifier made me pause to reflect on that initial plan. Then I thought, “Wait a minute. I’ve got a super-powerful dehumidifier already built into my house. My home air conditioner unit!” And it dehumidifies the whole house – not just a room or two.

With $200 still in my pocket (or not on my credit card), I fired up the a/c unit. 90 minutes later, the humidity in my basement had dropped from 60% to 50%. My back didn’t hurt from having to bend over, take out and dump the water reservoir on a dehumidifier either. The water removed from the air by the a/c unit goes straight to the drain.

If you’re looking to dry up a damp basement, go no further than your thermostat. Turn on the a/c and feel your air quality improve!
